Today we had a look at a magazine article presenting various ideas surrounding music videos, specifically targeting 'event videos' and Rihanna's Bitch Better Have my Money.
Here's a little summary of its concepts:-
- It believes that sexual and racial politics is just the kind of thing pop stars do at a certain point in their careers.
- Event videos conventions - must be long, self regarding, hubristic and flamboyantly expensive. Also some may feature celebrity cameos, obvious homages to obvious movies and a 15 year olds idea of adult content.
- Most videos pander to the viewer's aspirations - glamour, success, fun - the really big ones are concerned with superstar's own fantasies.
- Event videos are designed to project power and money but usually end up revealing an artists flaw
- A lot of songs only become successful due to the music/event videos which directly affect the chart positions.
